Project CONVERSAS
Conversas of Muslim and Jewish Origin in the Premodern Crown of Aragon: Parallels and Contrasts (CONVERSAS)
Introduction
The CONVERSAS project, conducted under the supervision of Professor Linda Gale Jones at the University Pompeu Fabra, is the first systematic, comparative, and interdisciplinary analysis of the religious and behavioral patterns of Muslim and Jewish descendants in the premodern Crown of Aragon. This research places a special focus on the role of women—particularly Moriscas and Judeo-Conversas—in preserving intangible cultural heritage within crypto-religious communities.
Research Objectives
The CONVERSAS project addresses significant gaps in the study of crypto-religious minorities by emphasizing women’s roles in cultural preservation and resistance. It challenges traditional views of medieval Iberian coexistence by examining the intricate socio-religious identities and cultural practices of Conversas. As such, the project is ambitious and goes beyond the State of the Art.
