The 6th edition of the conference Visions of an Unequal World. “Decent work and economic growth", focused on Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent work and economic growth). Topics such as the fight against job insecurity, the relationship between decent work and immigration, and the labour market through the gender perspective were discussed.

The conference, open to the public and free of charge, was organized in four thematic blocks dealing with an aspect related to decent work and economic growth. As in the previous edition, the conference was held 100% online on the YouTube platform for live virtual sessions.

During this sixth edition, all sessions followed the same methodology. During the first 20-30 minutes, the speaker gave an explanation of the topic followed by question time.

The total number of participants at the four sessions was 450 (members of the university community and general public), of whom 50 were from UPF.

Topics covered:

1st session - "Degrowth and Collapse" with Carlos Taibo, writer, editor and retired professor of Political Science and International Relations at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He has been a member of the editorial board of Sin Permiso since it was founded in 2006 and has published articles in such media as the newspaper Público.

"Economic growth very often translates into literally irreversible environmental aggressions that shape a dramatic legacy in terms of the rights of the future generations"

2nd session - "Fight against job insecurity. Towards the new era of tourism" with Roxana Hernandez, spokeswoman in Barcelona for Las Kellys, a Spain-wide association of room attendants.

“We were invisible workers, whom nobody knew"

3rd session - "Decent work and immigration" with Ferran Camas, a professor of Labour and Social Security Law and director of the Chair of Immigration, Rights and Citizenship at the University of Girona. International expert on occupation and labour for the European project Socieux+.

"Target 8.8 of Sustainable Development Goal 8 implicitly refers to the need to promote labour rights; to promote decent work for migrant workers. This is the only occasion in the entire sustainable development agenda where the United Nations makes any reference to migrant workers"

4th session - "From occupation to jobs: a view from a gender perspective" with Sara Moreno, sociologist. She is currently a professor of Sociology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and a researcher at the Sociological Research Centre on Everyday Life and Work (QUIT-UAB) and the Institute for Labour Studies (IET-UAB).

"It has been empirically demonstrated how the experience of teleworking in the case of women is negative"

The four virtual sessions were recorded and are available on the YouTube channel "Visions of an Unequal World".
