+RAIN Film Festival

+RAIN Film Festival opens an international call for submissions of films that use artificial intelligence (AI) models in their creative processes, and explore their aesthetic, narrative, ethical and political possibilities and implications. In its third edition, the +RAIN Film Festival invites filmmakers to present and discuss their work at public screenings. An international jury selects the most innovative films to be screened, also at Sónar+D.

+RAIN Film Festival is the first European festival of AI-generated films. The event invites discovery, experimentation and detailed reflection on the most relevant aspects of the authorial creation generated by this transformative technology.

+RAIN Film Festival aims to give space to film proposals made with generative AI that experiment with film language, that take a critical look at the limits and biases of the technology itself, that appropriate these tools in unexpected ways that strain the hegemonic forms of representation.

+RAIN Film Festival is open to film proposals directed by filmmakers and visual artists, but also by creators coming from other fields, to consider a wide spectrum of cinematographic codes and languages that play with the possibilities of generative Artificial Intelligence.

+RAIN Film Festival wants to encourage the participation of emerging filmmakers and filmmakers in training, with the aim of giving space to new talents and looks.

• The film submission period starts on November 22, 2024 and ends on March 9, 2025, at 23.59 h GMT+1.
• The films that will be part of the official selection will be communicated to the authors from April 1, 2025.

• The call for film submissions is international.
• They can be produced by individuals or collectives of any nationality and in any language, provided they are of legal age.
• Only one film per person or group may be submitted. In the case of a collective, the person registering declares and guarantees that he/she is the authorized representative of the rest of the members of his/her team and that he/she has obtained all the necessary rights to act on behalf of the team.
• Films generated totally or partially with AI models are accepted, provided that the selection committee considers that they use it in a significant way in the creation process.

• The submitted films have to be generated with AI (machine learning) based models. Models that are based on content understanding and content generation, such as text to video, video to video, text to audio, etc., are acceptable.
• They must be produced after January 1, 2024.
• The works are open to any film genre.
• The original version can be in any language, as long as English subtitles are provided.
• The natural persons who have used the AI for the elaboration of the work will be considered authors.
• Music video clips, teasers or other works for advertising purposes will not be considered.

• The participants guarantee that they have all the necessary rights to submit the work and also the rights of reproduction, distribution, public communication, making available to the public and exhibition, to be exhibited within the framework of the Festival.
• The participants guarantee that the works are free of any charge or encumbrance, and exonerate the +RAIN Film Festival from any claim from third parties in relation to the possible rights derived from the works.
• Participants guarantee that they have not used AI tools prohibited by the EU AI Law published in the Official Journal (OJ) of the European Union on July 12, 2024, as well as from providers that meet the criteria established in the aforementioned Law.

• The participants guarantee that the works do not violate the principles of freedom, democracy, justice, equality, independence, plurality and solidarity, which are guiding principles of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

The participants authorize UPF to reproduce, distribute, publicly communicate, make available to the public and exhibit the film presented, to be exhibited within the framework of the Festival and, in the case of being selected, to Sónar+D, not exclusively and without economic retribution. They also authorize UPF to make the works available for consultation by students through the UPF library archive. By registering the films, participants also agree that their works and data may be used for academic and research purposes, with UPF guaranteeing recognition of authorship in the case of citation in academic publications and other dissemination actions.

Participants will hold the UPF and Sónar+D harmless from all direct damages, liabilities, demands, obligations, judgments, sentences and expenses that may be generated as a result of claims by third parties in relation to the exercise of intellectual property rights authorized for the communication of the work within the framework of +RAIN Film Festival.

• Film submissions are made through the official +RAIN Film Festival submission form, available on the Festival's website.
• The film submission period starts on November 22nd, 2024 and ends on March 9th, 2025, at 23.59 h GMT+1.
• The films that will be part of the official selection will be communicated to the authors as of April 1, 2025.
• Registration is free of charge.
• The films will be considered registered once the participant receives the confirmation email.
• Acceptance of these rules implies: the acceptance of the public exhibition of the film at the festival and, if selected, at Sónar+D; the promotional use of fragments of the work; the graphic reproduction for advertising purposes; the acceptance of the use of the work and the data provided for academic and research purposes.

• The +RAIN Film Festival selection committee will select the films to be screened at the Festival. An international jury will select the films to be screened at Sónar +D.
• Their decision is final.
• The Festival and the selection committee reserve the right to make modifications to these rules or add annexes, as long as justified and not to the detriment of the works and participants. Any modification will be communicated publicly.
• The Festival reserves the right to exclude those works that incorporate any type of discrimination of any kind, whether of race, race, sex, gender or any other fundamental right in their content.
• Participation in the Festival implies acceptance of these rules, and the Festival reserves the right to admit works that do not comply with them.
• Once the work has been selected, the authors will have to confirm their participation by signing a letter of acceptance of the conditions established. Once participation has been confirmed, the work may not be withdrawn from the Festival.

For the exhibition of the selected films the +RAIN Film Festival will pay a fee of 250 € (gross), which also includes participation in the various activities of the Festival and the screening of the selected films at Sónar+D.

The Festival will cover accommodation and travel expenses for one author per project (with a maximum amount).

Two prizes will be awarded among the selected works, at the unappealable judgment of the jury:

• Best Film Award: €3,000 (gross).
• Emerging Talent Award: 2.000€ (gross).

+RAIN Film Festival also reserves the possibility of awarding other prizes, both by the jury and in collaboration with external entities.

+RAIN Film Festival collaborates with TVOD/SVOD platforms for the exhibition of the films in the program during the two weeks following the festival. In case of selection of a film, an agreement regarding the broadcasting on the platforms will also be established, indicating the terms and conditions of this broadcasting and the economic benefits generated.

Purpose: register for the +RAIN Film Festival and manage its development. Your personal data will be kept during the edition of the Festival and as long as legal responsibilities may be derived from its realization. However, the identification of the winners will be kept on the University's website in accordance with transparency legislation. Likewise, the dissemination of authorship data will be maintained in accordance with intellectual property law.

Legal basis: processing is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject is party or in order to take steps at the request of the data subject prior to entering into a contract (participation in the competition). 

Recipients: your data will be processed by the Pompeu Fabra University, the members of the jury and will not be transferred to third parties, except for the fulfillment of legally established obligations. The data of those selected by the jury will be communicated to XXX. The identification of the winners in accordance with transparency legislation will be published on the website. Authorship data will be disseminated in accordance with intellectual property law.

Rights: you can access your data; request their rectification, deletion and in certain cases their portability; you may object to their processing and apply for their limitation by following the procedures described at www.upf.edu/web/proteccio-dades/drets.
