To whom does the Community system apply?

Nationals of the following states:

  1. EU member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
  2. Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, as parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area.
  3. Switzerland, by virtue of the agreement of 21 June 1999, between the European Community and the Swiss Confederation on the free movement of persons.

Non-Community relatives of a Community national

  1. Spouse or partner registered in a public register established in an EU member state.
  2. Child of an EU citizen or of their spouse or registered partner, provided the child is under 21 or, if over 21, is dependent on them or handicapped.
  3. Dependent direct relatives in the ascending line of an EU citizen or of their spouse or registered partner.

 

Documentation for signing a contract

  1. EU citizen registration certificate (Community nationals) or EU citizen family member card (relatives of Community nationals), if you will be working in Spain for a period of over three months.

To that end, you must appear on the official register of inhabitants of the town or city in which you will be living. Information on registration in the city of Barcelona's official register of inhabitants.

Important: to register as an inhabitant of the city of Barcelona, you will need to make an appointment via this website (it is advisable to do so three or four weeks before you arrive in Barcelona). An appointment is not necessary if you will be living outside the city of Barcelona. See list of police stations.

  • Documents required:
    • Application form EX-18 (in duplicate)
    • Passport (original and a copy)
    • Written confirmation of employment from the University
    • You will also have to pay a processing fee of €10,60, and will be provided with a payment slip for doing so when you submit your application.
    • Relatives of Community nationals: apply for an EU citizen family member card.
  1. Apply for the Social Security number at Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social (form TA.1). You will need the original and a copy of your passport and of the EU citizen registration certificate.
  2. Proof of having opened a bank account in Spain.

 

Permanent residence

EU citizens and their relatives can obtain permanent resident status in Spain, as long as certain conditions are met. In general, you must have lived in Spain for a conitnuous five-year period.
