A decade worth of neolosferisms

On January 22nd, 2014, we unveiled the Neolosfera, a resource that followed in the footsteps of other initiatives such as A.Word.A.Day. In the Neolosfera’s case, the intention was to show society some of the Catalan words that the Observatori de Neologia has been documenting in the media since 1989, explain their use and meaning, and, when possible, the motivation behind them, through posts that include examples from the real contexts in which they were found. Since then, the Neolosfera has been publishing a word per day (except on the weekends, holidays and during the month of August), and, after 10 years, the number of published neolosferisms has already reached 2.286, which constitutes an actual dictionary that complements the official one, and is available to the general public as well as to linguistics professionals, who often use it in their writing, translation and revision tasks.

Throughout all these years, the Neolosfera has been possible thanks to the collaboration of many people who have helped the Observatori carry out their tasks, by detecting neologisms in texts, both written and spoken, and writing out neolosferisms. To thank and celebrate these 10 years, the word for the day of the anniversary is ser mel, a verbal phrase that designates something of the utmost quality, exquisite.
