WORK ON DEMAND

WORK ON DEMAND

The Work on Demand project (WOD) is a projected funded by the Planetary Wellbeing Framework of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra-Barcelona (2020-2022). WOD studies the practices and stories of one type of precarious and flexible workforce that has emerged in the context of platforms: the work-on-demand via apps. This kind of work implies the use of an app to get in contact with other organizations and potential clients by doing traditional works in a flexible manner, such as transportation and food delivery. WOD analyzes the practices and stories shared by and about these workers in social media (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok). Also, it observes the reviews left on these apps (Uber, Glovo, Deliveroo, Just Eat, among others). WOD looks at the social inequalities in terms of gender, country of origin and age within these practices and stories.

The main goals of WOD are to map the types of stories and practices that are shared about work-on-demand on social media, and, to understand the inequalities that might emerge in those stories. To do this, WOD uses a case study methodology with digital ethnography methods: online participant observation and semi-structured interviews.
