MEDIUM Research Group

MEDIUM is a research group recently created by the Department of Communication of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

The researchers that are part of MEDIUM are interested in the study of popular media culture (video games, celebrities, television fiction, YouTube, participatory culture), both in terms of social discourse that popular culture carries, and for its potential for media education and transmedia literacy. Likewise, we are interested in the evolution of the media ecosystem, media archeology and mediation processes. We are interested in finding out how the arrival of new media changes the media environment and uses, as well as their potential for the participation of the audience in the creation and dissemination of content.

At the methodological level, we are specialists in qualitative text and reception analysis (social semiotic and semiotic narrative, narratology, discourse analysis), as well as in participatory methodologies, which incorporate citizens into the design of the research.

Currently, MEDIUM members are leading three competitive projects financed by European institutions, within the H2020 program, and by State institutions, within the State Plan for R+D projects of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
