MEDIUM Research Group

MEDIUM is a research group from the Department of Communication at Pompeu Fabra University, coordinated by Lorena Gómez-Puertas and integrated into UNIC alongside JOVIS.COM and CRITICC. At MEDIUM, we share an interest in:

Popular media and digital culture: through the analysis of video games, celebrities, fandoms, entertainment and television fiction,  platforms and social networks, we have delved into areas such as austerity and neoliberal imaginaries, well-being and the labor culture of youth and new digital creators, redistribution and prosocial economy, dystopian and post-apocalyptic scenarios, models of femininity and masculinity, as well as diversity in affective and sexual relationships.

Mediatizations, ecology, and the evolution of the media and sociotechnological system: this branch specializes in the analysis of networks, platforms and interfaces, and includes the study of generative artificial intelligence.

Informal learning and transmedia literacy: in continuity with the previous research line and with the incorporation of Generative AI.

We are specialists in qualitative analysis of texts and reception (social and narrative semiotics, narratology, discourse analysis), as well as in participatory methodologies that involve citizens in the research design. The members of MEDIUM have led competitive projects funded by European and national organizations.
