In order to obtain the title of International Master in Cinematographic and Audiovisual Studies (Own Master), the student must take a total of 60 ECTS credits, 40 of which will be obtained from the specialization modules offered by each of the foreign universities participating in the different semesters and the remaining 20, starting from the Master's Final Project that the student will complete.

Therefore, the students will have to earn:

• 40 credits from the specialization modules offered by each of the foreign universities, which will be obtained in the different four-month periods. These credits will be achieved through two stays (one per four-month period) at two different universities and, if possible, in two different countries. At one of the universities chosen by the student, they must take 15 credits (3 subjects) and, at the other one, 25 credits (5 subjects).

• The remaining 20 credits, which will be obtained from the international master's degree final research project. 

This second phase of the 60 ECTS-credit specialization and internationalization programme can be done full-time (in one year) or part-time (over two years). 

In case the student wants to take them in one year, they would have to take 25 ECTS credits during the first four-month period which corresponds to the first stay at a foreign university, 15 ECTS credits during the second four-month period which corresponds to the second stay at a foreign university, and, during the third UPF term, they would have to enroll in the international master's final project —the remaining 20 ECTS credits.

In case the student wants to take them in two years, they would have stay abroad, enroll in a minimum of 20 ECTS credits and carry out their International Master's Final Project during the second year.

Students must carry out a final research project (20 ECTS credits) in which they can exercise their creativity in the research field. This project must be related to the lines of research from the groups of the Department of Communication at the UPF or from the Film departments of the other universities. This ensures that the students can be supervised by an expert. However, the students should preferably be tutored by a professor at the home university to make it easier for the research to be overseen.
The final research project must consist of a piece of original research. It must be carried out according to a rigorous methodology, following the rules accepted by the scientific communities of the universities pertaining to the agreement.

The skills that the students should attain with this research work are:

1. To be able to pose new problems of research in the film or audiovisuals field or propose different approaches to classic problems in this area. 

2. To know how to search for the documentary resources to address a research problem.

3. To work competently in analysis and research. 

4. To properly apply scientific methodology. 

5. To defend a piece of research work.

The final research project will be presented and defended before a panel composed of three doctor lecturers on the master's degree. The panel will be composed of six members (three members and three substitutes): a chairperson, a secretary and another member of the board.

Documentation

• Photocopy of the ID card or passport.

• Degree certificate (or provisional degree certificate) of the Master's Degree in Contemporary Film and Audiovisual Studies. If at the time of formalizing your registration you have not yet finished the master's degree, you must submit a signed declaration that you will obtain the qualification prior to the start of the master's degree. In case you have not finished the Master's Degree in Contemporary Film and Audiovisual Studies, you will have to hand the printed academic transcript in (if at the moment of formalizing the registration you have not yet earned the 40 ECTS credits corresponding to the required compulsory and optional subjects from the Master's Degree in Contemporary Film and Audiovisual Studies, you must submit a signed declaration stating that you will obtain these credits prior to the start of the master's degree).

• Certificates or qualifications of other complementary training in fields related to the master's degree.

• Academic report: in Catalan, Spanish or English, between 3 and 5 pages long, outlining the type of research work you wish to pursue. The academic knowledge applied in the report will be evaluated: how you propose to carry out the research taking into account the lines of research suggested by the master's degree.

The selection process will apply the following criteria for evaluation: 

• Academic transcript of certified official training in accordance with the UPF rules for evaluating academic transcripts and weighted according to the average mark of the university of origin.

• Academic or professional complementary training. 

• Students' research interests related with the international master's degree and its line of research will be evaluated by means of the brief academic report submitted.

Rating scale for evaluating students

As mentioned in the selection criteria, applicants will be evaluated by taking into account the academic transcripts of previous studies (50%) and complementary academic or professional training, as well as certificates or qualifications from other complementary training in fields related to master's degree programme (50%), which will also be taken into account.

The price of the International Master's Degree in Film and Audiovisual Studies is 3,000€

The UPF Department of Communication offers up to 3 study grants to students who are enrolled in the International Master in Cinematographic and Audiovisual Studies (IMACS).

Endowment/Amount of aid: €1,500 intended to cover part of the tuition fee for the academic year.
