[24/11/2022] The internationalisation of the university and multilingual and multicultural classrooms

Linguistic, identity, attitudinal and educational implications of the TRANSLINGUAM-UNI project

02.11.2022

In the last decade, university classrooms have received a growing number of students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In this way, they have become multilingual and multicultural spaces in which teaching is often given in a foreign language. When promoting internationalization strategies, universities appeal to the benefits of this transformation. However, it is necessary to know what consequences this transformation entails from a linguistic, identity, attitudinal and educational point of view.

In this session, aimed not only at researchers but, above all, at academic managers and university professors, we will present the results of the TRANSLINGUAM-UNI research project (Ref. AEI/FEDER PGC2018-098815-B-I00, IP: Mireai Trenchs)Transcultural competence in university classrooms with full teaching in English: Languages, attitudes, intercultural sensitivity and identity. We will discuss the consequences of this transformation and draw conclusions that serve to make informed decisions regarding the internationalization of the 21st century university.
