Jenny Brumme

I am a professor of Translation and Applied Linguistics at the Department of Translation and Language Sciences at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where I teach courses in translation for general purposes, literary translation and German language. I am a member of the InfoLex research group and the Franco-German PhD College “Collocations and Discourse Traditions”. After my PhD on Catalan normalization and neology (1985, University of Leipzig, Germany), I devoted my post-doctoral research (Habilitation) to the description of language change and norms in 19th century Spanish (1995, University of Potsdam, Germany), the findings of which were published as a book in 1997 by Nodus.

My research interests have always belonged to two fields. The first one lies in contrastive linguistics, the translation of linguistic variation and fictive orality. In this field, I led three research projects. The output of these projects consists of several joint publications carried out by the research team, for example, The Translation of Fictive Dialogue (Rodopi, 2012), coedited with Anna Espunya, and chapter and book publications such as my monograph Translating Fictive Voices (de Gruyter, 2012). In 2013 I was invited as a visiting professor to the University Mainz-Germersheim (Germany) to give lectures in this field.

The second research field I have devoted my research to is historical linguistics, particularly, the history of Spanish and Catalan in modern times, but also the historiography of Spanish and other Romance languages and the problems associated with the diachronic approach. In recognition for the work done in this second research field, I was awarded a short visit grant by the Swiss National Science Foundation. In 2015 I spent three months at the University of Basel (Switzerland) where I worked on the joint research project with Professor Beatrice Schmid. The outcome of this project awarded me the Mercè Rodoreda chair in 2018, which took me to give lectures at the CUNY Graduate Centre (New York, USA). I am the head of the research project “Perception of linguistic diversity in Spanish teaching materials, published in Catalonia in the 19th century” (2020-2023), funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
