Josep Fontana

Virtual bibliographical exhibition in tribute to Josep Fontana

Josep Fontana i Lázaro (Barcelona, 1931 – Barcelona, 2018) was a disciple of great historians, a teacher of many others, and a leading luminary in Catalan and Spanish historiography in the final decades of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st.

As the son of a bookseller, over the course of his life, he became a great bibliophile and a tireless buyer and collector of books and documents. As a collaborator of several publishing houses, he also introduced books by important historians from around the world. As for his peerless private library, he first lent it and ultimately donated it to Pompeu Fabra University.

This exhibition is made up primarily of works that Josep Fontana donated to UPF. It is organized into five blocks and brings together some fifty books that help shed light on him.

  • His teachers
  • As an editor
  • Homages
  • His work
  • His library

Each of the first three blocks includes a selection of significant books within that thematic area. For the block on Fontana’s own work, a broad selection was made from his extensive output.

The exhibition is, in short, a tribute to Professor Fontana, for both his academic and social contribution to knowledge and the interpretation of history and his passion and dedication to assembling a book collection of incomparable interest and quality and donating it to the university and, ultimately, to society.
