The Research Group in Political Theory (GRTP) is a consolidated research group of the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
The GRTP analyses, from a theoretical and applied perspective, democratic societies with a focus on a variety of topics in contemporary political theory – justice and rights, nationalism and secession, religion and democracy, federalism and minority rights, EU politics and regionalism, law and pluralism, art and politics.
The GRTP gathers together professors, research assistants, and PhD students interested in political theory per se as well as in combining political theorizing with comparative political science, institutional and policy analysis, law, or art studies. It sustains a wide net of contacts within other universities and international research groups working in the same field. Members of the GRTP have been recipients of international, Spanish and Catalan research awards.
Marc Sanjaume-Calvet (UPF) and Sergi Morales-Gálvez (University of Limerick) are the Coordinators of the GRTP activities.
The GRTP coordinates one MA program, the Master in Current Democracies: Nationalism, Federalism and Multiculturalism (director: Marc Sanjaume-Calvet [email protected]). The MA programs provide an interdisciplinary training in English.
The members of the GRTP teach and participate in the PhD Program of the Department of Political and Social Sciences. The GRTP welcomes PhD research proposals on a variety of fields of contemporary political theory, and encourages potential candidates to contact the Group’s coordinator or its members by email.
The objectives of the GRTP are:
- to coordinate and collaborate in national and European research projects on different dimensions of contemporary democracies.
- to develop an outstanding publication agenda.
- to collaborate with different think tanks, foundations, and cultural centers in organizing conferences and events for both specialized and broad audiences.
- to provide expertise and counseling for political institutions, and think tanks, and foundations.
- to strengthen and develop a network of excellent MA and PhD students able to publish and pursue academic and non-academic careers.
- to welcome and develop a group of postdoctoral researchers interested in political theory.
