Contra el genocidi i contra la violació dels drets humans, a Gaza i arreu del món

Peace comes when you talk to the person you most hate. And that’s where the courage of a leader comes.

Desmond Tutu (1931-2021), first recipient of an honorary doctorate from UPF

These words, spoken by Desmond Tutu, the first person ever to be awarded an honorary doctorate by UPF, are more applicable today than ever. The UPF condemns, and will always condemn, the use of violence to settle disputes. At UPF, we advocate approaching political or territorial conflicts based on dialogue and respect for all peoples and minorities.

As a university, we also want to show our support to the academic community in countries at war. Universities and scientific institutions are more necessary than ever in these regions. Access to education and the promotion of critical thinking, in the context of strong independent institutions, are the way to ensure the informed debate and reflection that can open the door to new avenues for finding solutions.

At UPF, we are aware of the university community’s concern for the human rights violations we are seeing in the conflicts around us. That is why on this website you will find information about campaigns and actions related to current conflicts, as well as opinion pieces and institutional statements. We also offer a dedicated e-mail address – [email protected] – to contact the university and let us know about your interests and concerns.

Social transformation and gender equality are the focus of the new issue of the magazine “360upf”

Social transformation and gender equality are the focus of the new issue of the magazine “360upf”

Among others items, the fourth edition of the digital magazine includes reports on the gender perspective at the University, open access and the tenth anniversary of the Center for Brain and Cognition, and interviews with the rector’s delegate for sustainability, a student who is about to finish the bachelor’s degree in Law who suffered a stroke, and an alumna linked to the world of publishing.

Imatge inicial -

The magazine 360upf, the digital publication that gets the feel of the activity of the University in an innovative way, has published its fourth issue - May 2019.  And it does so with contents available in three languages (Catalan, Spanish and English) that give special importance to gender equality and the University’s commitment to social transformation and sustainability.

Following a presentation, we find the report in the “Community” section, examining how gender perspective has come to universities to improve the quality of teaching and research. It is a comprehensive snapshot of the state of affairs at UPF, while highlighting the key role of the Equality Unit and reviewing various transformative initiatives and personal experiences.

The report in the “Community” section examines how gender perspective improves the quality of teaching and research at the university.

The magazine also includes a further two reports: the first, in the “In depth” section, focuses on UPF’s commitment to open access, in order to promote more ethical and responsible research; and the second (in the “On campus” section), which examines the challenges and the work being carried out in the last ten years by the Center for Brain and Cognition (CBC) at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies in the field of human cognition.

Three interviews with members of the university community and articles about “#onsónlesdones?” (where are the women?)

Ester Oliveras, the rector’s delegate for sustainability and lecturer with the Department of Economics and Business, is interviewed in the “Profiles” section, in which she reviews the current situation and the University’s strategies for the future regarding sustainability in addition to touching on various current issues such as social entrepreneurship, collaborative economics and blockchain technology.

The other two interviews included in the publication are a story of overcoming adversity by Eduard Paredes, a student in the fourth year of the bachelor’s degree in Law, who suffered a severe stroke when he was seventeen (“Zoom” section); and secondly, the experience of Maria Cardona, holder of a bachelor’s degree in Translation and Applied Linguistics, literary agent at Pontas Literary and Film Agency, with her reflections on the world of publishing (“Our alumni” section).

Rounding off the contents of the magazine, the “Kaleidoscope” section, which under the hashtag #onsónlesdones? offers a collection of opinions by lecturers Jordi Balló, Emilia Gómez, María José González, María José Masanet, and Arnau Roig; and finally, the sections “Tres60” which shows how eighty students present the University’s degrees at the Education Fair, and the “UPF highlights”.

In 2018, 360upf won the Innovation in Communication award at the tenth edition of the Press Office awards of the Catalan Association of Journalists in recognition of its commitment to digital resources and its proximity to the student community.  The multimedia format of the magazine, which comes out twice a year, allows enriching content with video, audio files, photo galleries and other interactive elements.
