Carles Feixa is co-author of the book El Rey. Diario de un Latin King, with César Andrade, better known as King Manaba, a work that has arisen from the TRANSGANG project, and a team of researchers from the JOVIS.com research group at the Communication Department of the UPF, thanks to a European Research Council Advanced Grant.

In the words of Feixa: “The work is inspired by the life of King Manaba, although any resemblance to reality could be pure coincidence. Between the criminal gang and the music group, this book seeks to tell, first-hand, the life of a King: The Diary of a Latin King. Basically, the leitmotif is protagonist’s own personal, always selective memory: introspection, both anecdotal and profound, narrated by a scoundrel that sometimes reminds you of Tony Soprano, although he has not committed his crimes, conversing with an anthropologist who sometimes acts as doctor Melfi, despite not knowing about psychoanalysis”.

“Between the criminal gang and the music group, this book seeks to tell, first-hand, the life of a King: The Diary of a Latin King”.

The aim of the work is to disseminate and publicize the reality of the community of Latin Kings & Queens in the world. The book is organized around a powerful chronicle of three journeys: the one by César Andrade (aka King Manaba) to his past as a migrant, Inca, king and prisoner; the one by Carles Feixa (aka King Book) in search of the Latin kings and queens of Catalonia and beyond; and the journey by the two to understand the ways of life of the “Almighty Nation of Latin Kings and Queens”. On 20 February, the authors presented the work at Restaurant Manaba in Barcelona.

A journey through an arduous process of legalization, cultural projects in search of recognition, the experience of prison and, finally, freedom

The work is the result of countless conversations over fifteen years since the authors first met in 2005, during a raid on a youth club in Barcelona, until the present. A journey through an arduous process of legalization, cultural projects in search of recognition, the experience of prison and, finally, freedom. The life testimony of King Manaba is complemented by photographs and personal letters, as well as epilogues signed by compatriots of the Almighty King and Queen Nation and another two neighbouring nations.

Carles Feixa is a full professor of Social Anthropology with the Department of Communication at Pompeu Fabra University and author of numerous books, including De jóvenes, bandas y tribus (1998), Jóvenes Latinos en Barcelona (2006), and De la Generación@ a la # Generación (2016), and he has participated in the construction of the Cultural Association of Latin Kings and Queens of Catalonia. Currently, Feixa directs the project TRANSGANG to provide a transnational, intergenerational, intergeneric and transmediatic approach renewed for the gangs of the 21st century, and to draft a white paper on good practices for public policies.

César Andrade, also known as King Manaba, was born in Manabi, Ecuador (1976). He was an Inca of the Latin Kings & Queens in Spain. Reader of numerous requests, including the Constitution Manifesto (Chicago 1960s) and other apocryphal texts. Like the Phoenix, he has fallen several times, but has always been able rise again. He is currently involved in the research for the project TRANSGANG.
