Ana Castaño’s research revolves around the teaching and assessment of critical literacy among university students of Spanish as a Foreign Language. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Anthropology from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, a Master’s degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (Universitat de Barcelona and Universitat Pompeu Fabra) and a PhD in Translation and Language Sciences (UPF). She holds a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education  (Modern Foreign Languages) from the University of Cumbria and has taught Spanish in Secondary and University contexts both in the UK and China.

Nowdays shi is senior lecturer of Spanish Language at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages of the University of Oxford. Her research interests are New Literacy Studies, literacy practices, critical literacy, critical competence, Critical Discourse Analysis, ideology.
