The office of the European Parliament in Barcelona and the Diari de Barcelona create the ‘Eureka!’ podcast in which students of Journalism speak about European initiatives from a young person’s perspective

The initiative seeks to bring European projects closer to young people using their language. Hence, those responsible are aged just 21 to 23 years old.

A group of four students on the UPF bachelor’s degree in Journalism has been commissioned to produce a series of 12 episodes dealing with European matters. Judit Vallès, Mar Suy, Pol Valero and Pau Torres are preparing the podcast, the first capsules of which have already been published and which will run until the end of June.

The subject matter of the first chapter, published on 14 May, deals precisely with young people’s involvement in the European Union and pays special attention to European Year of Youth, being held this year. The second issue coincides with 17 May, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and is given over to the rights of this group of people on a European scale.

"The younger generations are especially interested in the EU. In celebration of European Year of Youth in 2022 and the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus programme, at the Office of the European Parliament in Barcelona we have wanted to kick off this podcast project together with the Diari de Barcelona so that it is students on the bachelor’s degree in Journalism who explain the European projects and legislation of greatest interest to young people”, asserts Sergi Barrera, head of the Office of the European Parliament in Barcelona.

The Diari de Barcelona, the medium run by students of Pompeu Fabra University, is also positive concerning the opportunity to promote the European institutions by way of a journalistic project.

In the words of Roger Cassany, DdB coordinator: “Young people’s relations with Europe have changed a lot. Nowadays, nearly everyone has studied abroad and has friends in different countries speaking different languages. However, the role of European institutions is still often not well known, unjustly so, taking into account their role in the construction of today’s Europe. The podcast EUreka! arises from this need and seeks to contribute its grain of sand from Barcelona”.

Mar Suy, one of the four students producing the podcast, is grateful for the opportunity to take part in this project. “It’s a really good way to take your first steps in the world of journalism and to learn about, and then explain, European institutions and programmes. We are pleased that the Office of the European Parliament in Barcelona has decided to entrust the project to such a young team”.
