About this master

The Master in Asian-Pacific Studies in a Global Context offers a training path for university graduates, professionals and researchers from a variety of curricular and disciplinary backgrounds, whether in Asian studies or other areas of the humanities, social sciences or technical sciences. The programme takes an international approach to the study of Asian-Pacific cultural diversity. At the same time, it explores the region’s connectivity and globalizing nature in depth, providing interdisciplinary training from an historical perspective.

The programme is open to all candidates holding a long degree or bachelor’s degree in the social and legal sciences or arts and humanities, awarded for the successful completion of a bachelor’s degree programme. Specifically, it is open to holders of degrees in: law, global studies, humanities, political science, history, philosophy, anthropology, journalism, sociology, audiovisual communication, fine arts, or translation and language sciences.


MANDATORY DOCUMENTS
 

In order to be admitted to the Master's Degree in Asian-Pacific studies candidates must submit the following documents:

  • Official university bachelor's or master's degree from the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) or equivalent foreign degree allowing access to a postgraduate degree in the country that issued the degree. Should the applicant have not finished yet their studies at the time of application, they will be asked to sign a statement certifying that they will have completed them before the start of the master degree program. 

    Degrees in any academic field of study will be accepted.
  • Academic transcript of the accredited official training with the average grade at the university of origin. 
  • Curriculum Vitae in Spanish, Catalan or English.
If you already know English sufficiently well and do not deem it necessary to provide formal certification, please send us a brief letter explaining why.
  • Spanish level certification: some subjects are taught in Spanish, it is recommendable to have Spanish language knowledge
  • Identity Card or Passport

OPTIONAL DOCUMENTS

  • A letter of motivation in Spanish, English or Catalan stating the candidate's interest in following the master's programme (600 to 800 words). 
  • Identity Card or Passport.


Optional documents
 

  • During the second year some subjects are taught in Spanish; therefore, it is recomendable to have a sufficient knowledge of this language.
  • Two letters of recommendation. 
  • Previous education/trainings in the Chinese or Asian field.
  • Professional experience in any of the fields related to the master's programme.
  • Research experience.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Additional academic training in areas related to the master's programme.
  • Additional professional experience.

The undergraduate degree/diploma and the academic transcript 

If you have finished your Bachelor degree when you formalise your application, you will need to send us the following documents:

  • A photocopy of your undergraduate degree/diploma or Certification/proof of degree completion.
  • A photocopy of your official final undergraduate transcript.

However, if you have not yet completed your undergraduate studies when formalising application, you will need to provide us with the following documents:

  • A signed declaration of obtaining your degree before the commencement of the master's programme 
  • A photocopy of the provisional undergraduate transcript. 
If the diploma or the academic transcript are not written in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Portuguese or Italian, you will also have to include the respective sworn translations into Catalan or Spanish.
  • Officers at institutions and government agencies with an international presence in Asia-Pacific;
  • programme managers, vendors, managers or members of international delegations or branch offices of international companies with operations in Asia-Pacific; translators, editors, critics and creators in the field of cultural intermediation with Asia-Pacific;
  • officers at NGOs with operations in Asia-Pacific;
  • mediators and programme managers in the field of intermediation and management of immigration from Asia-Pacific;
  • analysts, journalists, content creators, press chiefs, marketing team members, website administrators and social media managers in the field of information management, communication and journalism related to Asia-Pacific;
  • gallery owners and managers, exhibition curators, managers of cultural companies and institutions, and content creators in the field of cultural management related to Asia-Pacific;
  • researchers specializing in fields related to Asia-Pacific; university lecturers in fields related to Asia-Pacific.

The master's degree programme in Asian-Pacific Studies aims to offer specialized training in modern and contemporary Asia to professionals and university graduates with different backgrounds and from a variety of fields. This general objective can be broken down into the following three specific objectives:

  • To provide professionals and researchers with the training they need to pursue a professional or academic career based or focused on different regions of Asia-Pacific and to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired in their previous training to areas related to Asia.
  • To produce professionals and researchers able to actively participate in Asian-European relations in the areas of international trade, cultural management, institutional relations, migratory movements, etc.
  • To produce professionals and researchers able to grasp the complexity of contemporary Asia from a historical and civilizational perspective and, thus, able to enrich their analyses and decision-taking regarding matters related to  Asian-Pacific within the methodological framework of their field of specialization.

Basic competences

CB6 – To possess and have an understanding of knowledge that provides a basis or opportunity for being original in developing and/or applying ideas, often in a research context.

CB7 – To enable students to show an ability to apply the knowledge gained and a capacity for problem-solving in new or unexplored settings within broader (or multi-disciplinary) contexts relating to their field of study.

CB8 – To enable students to show an ability to integrate knowledge and deal with the complex situation of forming judgments on the basis of incomplete or limited information which includes reflections on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.

CB9 – To enable students to show an ability to convey their conclusions and knowledge and the underlying reasons behind them to expert and layman’s audiences in a clear, unambiguous manner.

CB10 – To enable students to possess the learning skills needed to continue studying in a largely self-directed, independent fashion.

General competences

GC 1: Ability to recognize the different social and communication codes governing interpersonal interaction in order to adapt and respond to new situations in different disciplinary and cultural environments.

Specific competences

SC 1: Ability to identify the main features of cultural and historical realities and contemporary developments of a global world in Asia-Pacific area.

SC 2: Ability to analyse the process of interaction between the different cultures of the Asia-Pacific area.

SC 3: Ability to recognize and describe contemporary and modern Asia-Pacific history.

SC 4: Ability to identify and explain the debates, discourses and perceptions that mediate our knowledge on cultural diversityof Asia-Pacific region.

SC 5: Ability to recognize emerging realities in present-day Asia, using and identifying the various current debates and paradigms governing the analysis of contemporary China.

SC 6: Ability to identify and explain who the main actors are in the interaction and economic, political and cultural intermediation between Europe and Asia.

SC 7: Ability to identify and recognize cultural and communication dynamics in contemporary Asia, describing the basic chronology and periodization criteria, as well as the main actors, processes and mass culture movements in contemporary Asia.

SC 8: Ability to generate and critically manage a corpus of primary and secondary sources that makes it possible to produce new documentation about specific topics related to Asia-Pacific.

SC 9: Ability to analyse and understand the current cultural, economic and social situation in Asia, applying the necessary conceptual and methodological tools from the social sciences and humanities for the analysis of contemporary Asia.

This master's degree programme allows students to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to undertake doctoral studies in the field. The programme qualifies students to apply for admission to the doctoral programmes offered by the Department of Humanities: the doctorate in Humanities and the doctorate in History.
