GTI Joins European VISTA-SL Project to Develop 3D Avatars for Sign Language E-Learning

29.05.2025

The Interactive Technologies Group (GTI) at Universitat Pompeu Fabra is proud to participate in the European project VISTA-SL (Visual Interactive System for Teaching and Assessment of Sign Languages). This initiative aims to create an innovative e-learning platform for sign languages, integrating 3D avatars, machine learning tools, and gamification elements to enhance the learning experience.

As experts in computational design and animation, GTI will lead the development of 3D avatars that serve as virtual instructors, demonstrating correct sign language expressions and providing visual feedback to learners. Initially, the platform will support Greek, German, Dutch, and Irish sign languages, with plans to include Catalan Sign Language (LSC) using materials from UPF's existing LSC MOOC.
