It is well-known that intonation conveys meaning, many of them having to do with regulating the common ground and turn-taking. Though there is much debate as to precisely what meanings can be conveyed and how it is best modelled. In the context of the SELFLING project, we approach this question based on a novel empirical domain, namely self-talk. When people talk to themselves there is no external addressee and hence there is no obvious need for regulating either common ground or turn-taking. This invites the question as to what intonational contours are found in self-talk and if any of the existing intonational contours are illicit in this context. In the "Sound Meaning" workshop, two members of the SELFLING team:
• Nancy Hedberg (Simon Fraser University)
• Johannes Heim (University of Aberdeen)
will present their ongoing work on intonation. In the brainstorming session, open to anyone interested, we will present our storyboard methodology with the goal of discussing potential insights and observations from the audience regarding two main questions:
• How is intonation used in self-talk in your own language
• What strategies are available to replace the meaning associated with intonation in English
Program:
11:30–11:35 Opening remark
11:35–12:35 Nancy Hedberg (Simon Fraser University): “The intonation and meaning of self-directed and other-directed wh-questions in English”
12:45–13:45 Johannes Heim (University of Aberdeen): “Lessons from the prosody of non-assertive speech acts for studying self-talk”
14:00–15:00 Catered lunch
15:00–16:30 Brainstorming session on self-talk

Meeting description: Markers of modal displacement in natural language are used to introduce, discuss, assess and manipulate possible scenarios. Until relatively recently, work on the semantics of modality had concentrated on the verbal domain, and in particular on modal auxiliaries. However, over the last years, there has been an increased interest in the expression of modality across categories.
