Research Outline

The Studies Center on Science, Communication and Society from Pompeu Fabra University (SCS-UPF) works to approach society and science. This means, on the one hand, it will foster scientific knowledge and culture, and, on the other hand, it will work for a better alignment between R+D+i –in all its stages– and society’s needs and values.

To reach its objectives, SCS-UPF focuses on different research lines: science communication, public understanding of science, public engagement and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).

Current Projects

  • Reconfiguring Research and Innovation Constellations (partner) RiConfigure

H2020 EU project. It aims at making collaborations across sectors of society thrive in order to solve complex challenges in research, development and innovation.

  • Fostering a Next Generation of European Photovoltaic Society through Open Science (partner) GRECO

H2020 EU project. Its main goal is to put Open Science and other Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) approaches into action in a real research project in the photovoltaic sector.

  • Communication role on perception and beliefs of EU Citizens about Science (partner) CONCISE

H2020 EU project. Research on the channels, sources of information and opinions of European citizens regarding relevant science topics through a series of citizen consultations.

  • Scientific Understanding and Provision of an Enhanced and Robust Monitoring system for RRI (partner) SUPER_MoRRI

It is about co-learning and reflection with the aim of improving the relationship between science and society and analysing the changes that are taking place. Each year, more than 300 people participate in this conference, organised by UPF-Barcelona School of Management, SCS-UPF and “La Caixa” Foundation, and with the support from FECYT (the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology).

Unidad de Cultura Científica e Innovación (UCC+i): it coordinates the activities program of the SCS-UPF and carries out communication and outreach activities. UCC+I received funding support from FECYT (the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology).

Within the framework of the Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication at the Pompeu Fabra University - Barcelona School of Management (UPF-BSM), 5 round tables have been organized in the 2019/2020 period. In these round tables, 3-4 leading professionals from all over Spain explain what the trends will be in their respective areas and what are the “news” that their fields will bring in future years. These virtual events brought together 196 people.

On September 15, 2020, SCS-UPF and the Association for Affective-Sexual Diversity in Science and Technology (PRISMA) co-organized the session “What does science have to say about Trans * identities? It was a virtual event that brought together 219 people to discuss science as a tool to provide knowledge and achieve a better quality of life.

SCS-UPF staff has given 12 workshops and courses about Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), Open Science, Making research gender sensitive, Oral Communication and Preprints.
