Virtual and augmented reality platform for left atrial appendage occlusion device implantation

The main goal of this project is to compare augmented and virtual reality technologies for the pre-operative planning and training of left atrial appendage occluder implantation devices. During the past years, in collaboration with Hospital Clínic, Hospital de Sant Pau and other international partners, we have developed a web-based platform, VIDAA, to visualize a 3D model of the LAA geometry, obtained from 3D patient-specific images, together with CAD models of different devices. We also developed a prototype virtual reality version of VIDAA, using Unity and tested on the HTC Vive Pro. This prototype needs to be improved (e.g. 3D rendering of images, device deformation) and adapted to work with the Magic Leap AR glasses. A comparative analysis on how these technologies could fit in a clinical environment will be performed in conjunction with our clinical partners.
