Caterina Freixa, saved from a witchcraft trial by the mobilization of 14 first-rate lawyers (1619)

07.07.2024

From 4 to 6 July 2024, the international conference "The origins of the witch hunt in Europe" has been held in Barcelona and Esterri d'Àneu, on the occasion of the 6th centenary of the "Ordinacions d'Àneu" (1424). Organized by the IRCVM of the UB and coordinated by the specialist Dr. Pau Castell, the conference has recognized the European primacy of the "Ordinacions d'Àneu" in the "typification" of witchcraft crimes and the regulation of their prosecution processes in the Valls d'Àneu. My contribution? A paper on the origins of the end of witch-hunting in Catalonia, two hundred years later (!!), after a lot of innocent people (especially women) died all over the country, victims of the rage and ignorance of their peers, without a minimum respect for any kind of rights or guarantees. The title of my paper was "'Patronos lamiarum': 14 first-rate lawyers in defence of Caterina Freixa, d'Artés (1619)". These are the first results of an ongoing research that promises many revelations, very soon.
