Given that the need for society's engagement is a key aspect of RRI, citizens must be aware of and participate in science.

There has recently been a shift in focus from open access, involving publishing research results without restrictions, to the broader concept of open science. The aim is to make scientific research available to everybody so that science becomes more transparent and efficient. That can be achieved by making research methods, data and results openly accessible.
