New book by the REACT researchers: Tenemos el alma cauterizada

The book "Tenemos el alma cauterizada" Una etnografía del antigitanismo cotidiano y sus consecuencias by Zenia Hellgren and Lorenzo Gabrielli (Icaria 2024) is based on ethnographic research about Roma women and men's lived experiences of everyday antigypsyism in the Barcelona area, conducted in the framework of our earlier research-action project AGREP

The book "Tenemos el alma cauterizada" is based on research conducted for the project AGREP: The Action Program for Effective Reporting of Antigypsyism and Discrimination, funded by the European Union's Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme. This project in turn contributed to give rise to the REACT project. The book will be used in the teacher training program and as part of the REACT project's dissemination given its relevance for understanding the dynamics of (structural) racism and its consequences.

The purpose of the book is to disseminate our research on antigypsyism to a broad audience in order to pursue our aim of using research-based knowledge to promote awareness-raising for social transformation.

Synopsis (translated from Spanish):

“Our souls are cauterized,” an older man told us, referring to the scars left by the daily expressions of antigypsyism: not being called for a job interview, being chased by security guards in stores and shopping centers, or that your neighbors don’t say hello or even try to kick you out, among others. With this book we want to bring academic research closer to a broader audience, to invite reflection on everyday racism and on one of its most persistent expressions in our society: antigypsyism. As a result of our commitment not only to study the dynamics of discrimination and inequalities but to contribute to changing them, here we give prominence to the Roma people who shared their experiences with us. They are stories that with pain, irony, sorrow, despair or hope bring us closer to the rejection and discrimination that day after day, year after year affect these people, their families, friends and neighbors in a multitude of daily situations. We hope that these stories can help dismantle the normalization of everyday racism towards the Roma people and break these deeply rooted prejudices that cloud our vision.
