This is the first document of a research group or a researcher. It is the one that contains the definition of the topic and the concepts associated with it, the formulation of the research problem, the objectives, the research questions, the variables, the relationship between them and the formulation of hypotheses, the methodology to be applied and the bibliography, which is a starting point.

A schedule detailing the tasks assigned and the period in which they will be performed is usually also included, generally in the form of a Gantt chart (see these two models).

A report details who are the members of the group, who is the principal investigator, what is the trajectory and curriculum vitae of each member and of the group as a whole, if they have worked together on other occasions. The task of each member is explained.

The relationship with other national or international research groups is specified. When it is a doctoral research, therefore individual, these contents are adapted.

The expected research results are detailed, in the form of attendance at congresses and other academic events, submission of communications (or papers, if invited).

A report contains a detailed budget, divided into expenditures on consumables, inventories (purchase of computers, laboratory equipment, scanners, audio or video recorders, or other devices necessary to carry out the research, as well as computer programs or licenses), contracts with associated personnel or companies that will carry out part of the work (for example, digitalization of documents), expenses for holding scientific events (congresses, seminars, meetings), and also for field work, including travel and accommodation, per diem, and other items.
