The research unit is based on the work carried out at the LSC Lab (Catalan Sign Language Laboratory), which is part of the UPF’s Formal Linguistics Group (GLiF). It is devoted to the description, analysis and documentation of sign languages, and of LSC in particular. It directly contributes to the research activity at LSC-UPF Actua. As natural languages in the visual-gestural modality, a deeper understanding of sign languages will help contribute to characterizing the human faculty of language. This goal can only be achieved through precise description and use of the tools made available by linguistic theory. Moreover, these linguistic descriptions satisfy the needs of certain areas in which knowledge of sign language grammar is crucial, such as teaching, training and other tasks carried out by the training and resources unit.
