The Research Group on Empires, Metropoles, and Extra-European Societies (GRIMSE) is the result of an ongoing collaboration between scholars, stretching over 20 years, dedicated to the study of the Spanish Empire. Our purposes are two-fold. First, the group seeks to break with old historical narratives caught within national traditions and outdated generalizations; we instead emphasize the connections and interdependencies among various empires, states, and polities throughout the world. Second, we approach our research from a comparative perspective, engaging with other historiographical traditions that have also explored the various supranational historical phenomena with which we are concerned.
