These words, spoken by Desmond Tutu, the first person ever to be awarded an honorary doctorate by UPF, are more applicable today than ever. The UPF condemns, and will always condemn, the use of violence to settle disputes. At UPF, we advocate approaching political or territorial conflicts based on dialogue and respect for all peoples and minorities.
As a university, we also want to show our support to the academic community in countries at war. Universities and scientific institutions are more necessary than ever in these regions. Access to education and the promotion of critical thinking, in the context of strong independent institutions, are the way to ensure the informed debate and reflection that can open the door to new avenues for finding solutions.
At UPF, we are aware of the university community’s concern for the human rights violations we are seeing in the conflicts around us. That is why on this website you will find information about campaigns and actions related to current conflicts, as well as opinion pieces and institutional statements. La weDISCOVER.brussels reuneix més de 70 estudiants en el marc del projecte EUTOPIA
Del 29 de març a l’1 d’abril, estudiants de les sis universitats d’EUTOPIA uniran forces de manera virtual per abordar els reptes socials locals i globals. La Vrije Universiteit Brussel és l’amfitriona de la trobada.
Brussel·les és el centre d’atenció d’EUTOPIA aquests dies a través de la weDISCOVER.brussels. Més de 70 estudiants de les sis universitats de l’aliança (Warwick, VUB, CY Cergy Paris, Goteborg, Ljuljana i Pompeu Fabra) participen en unes jornades virtuals per afrontar reptes socials locals i globals, amb l’objectiu de plantejar solucions innovadores. Treballaran de manera col·laborativa amb institucions locals, com el Parlament flamenc, la P&V Foundation o l’Ajuntament d’Ixelles, entre altres.
Els desafiaments plantejats són compartits amb altres ciutats europees, d’aquí que els estudiants uneixin forces per trobar una visió compartida que els ajudi a abordar-los amb la màxima garantia d’èxit possible. Entre les diferents sessions de treball conjunt es tractaran temes com la millora i l’increment de l’interès per la recerca entre estudiants de primària i secundària o com reduir la bretxa digital entre els més joves.

El programa també inclou un tour virtual per Brussel·les perquè els estudiants participants coneguin de primera mà la capital d’Europa. La visita es focalitza en conèixer iniciatives ciutadanes i el desenvolupament urbà de la pròpia ciutat.
Construint la universitat europea del futur
EUTOPIA és una aliança d’universitats europees què té per objectiu estudiar la possibilitat de crear una nova institució d’ensenyament superior amb caràcter transnacional dins d’Europa. Actualment, hi ha 41 consorcis similars a EUTOPIA, i cada consorci està integrat per un nombre variable d’universitats: entre cinc i onze cadascun. Disset d’aquests consorcis van ser aprovats en una convocatòria competitiva el juny del 2019 i van començar la seva activitat l’1 de desembre del 2019. La resta, es van aprovar en una segona convocatòria el passat mes de juny del 2020. Es tracta d’una acció de la Comissió Europea per valorar la creació del que es coneix com a Iniciativa Universitats Europees.

The Red Cross also provides emergency humanitarian aid in regions in crisis.
Legal Clinic
The UPF Legal Clinic regularly holds talks and roundtables on the protection of human rights in crisis regions.
Libraries Without Borders
The Libraries Without Borders programme, sponsored by the Catalan Development Cooperation Agency (ACCD), offers Catalan public library patrons knowledge and insight into situations of human rights violations and provides resources to take action.
Council for At-Risk Academics
The Council for At-Risk Academics, in partnership with universities and higher education institutions, provides urgently-needed help to academics in immediate danger, those forced into exile, and many who choose to work on in their home countries despite serious risks.
