Why King’s College + UPF?

Objectives

This double bachelor's degree programme provides training that enables students to understand the structure and functions of two very different legal systems and their rules, to assimilate basic normative content, to apply techniques for arguing a case and for interpreting rules of law and to compare and understand interaction between legal systems, not only in England and in Spain, but also in the Anglo-Saxon and the Hispanic worlds.

Skills

Double-degree graduates acquire the following skills:

Some general or cross-disciplinary skills that aid their personal development and can be beneficial in professional activity. They notably include identifying and analysing social conflicts and means of settling them; communicating and negotiating; using initiative and taking the lead; interconnecting knowledge and thinking critically; using foreign technical language fluently, especially the English language; working in a team in an international context increasingly globalized; and being committed to ethical conduct.

Graduates also acquire specific skills useful for activities in the legal arena. These skills revolve around distinguishing between different sources of law and using them correctly; recognizing the institutions and guiding principles of public and private law; mastering legal argumentation; assimilating constitutional principles and values in relation to interpreting law; and composing reports, legal opinions and other legal documents. This is not done on the basis of two national legal systems, one of the common law tradition (the English legal system) and one of the civil law tradition (the Spanish and, in some aspects, the Catalan legal systems), which gives students extraordinary skills in comparative law, conflict of laws, management of international cases and disputes, etc.

· Academic Structure (since Academic Year 21-22)

Course offer at UPF may vary, with appropiate official approvals, depending on the contents that have been effectively taught in the first two years at KCL.

Four academic years in two venues:

1st and 2nd courses at Kings College London (KCL) - Strand Campus

3rd and 4th courses at UPF - Campus de la Ciutadella

In both universities fees depend upon external and internal regulations and may vary.

Information about de admissions procedure, exclusively through UCAS:

1. King’s College London course page may answer any question prospective students had around the application process.
2. From the course page there are also links to King’s international entry requirements, which will be useful to any student interested in applying from Spain or third countries.
3. A reference is needed: A written recommendation from a teacher, adviser or professional who academically knows the prospective student. The teacher needs to predict grades for pending qualifications which are being studied now (9.0 overall with 10, 9, 9 in three subjects predicted). A conditional offer may be made to the candidate and would become unconditional if he/she is awarded the required grades.
4. Apart from IELTS and other test scores (as proof of competence in English), King’s has required grades for English in the International Bac and the European Bac, but not in the Spanish Bac.
5. An LNAT test (National Admissions Test for Law) which lasts 135 minutes must be submitted either in Barcelona, in Madrid or in other  towns, preferably before mid-December so its results will be available on time.

From September to June

Morning or Afternoon: it will change in London or Barcelona

English the first two years of the program at KCL (with a legal seminar in Spanish).

Spanish the last two years of the program at UPF (if the student so wishes, he/she will be able to participate in groups where teaching is provided in Catalan)

External internships will be provided during the 3rd and 4th years in Barcelona, although the academic intensity and teaching structure of the program can make them difficult to develop.

Since this program will be developed in two venues (two years in London and two years in Barcelona), additional stays abroad are not foreseen.

Career prospects refer those of UPF Law Graduates, which are listed in a non-exhaustive way. However, there are other career prospects with a transnational relevance for KLC graduates and for graduates that have combined an English LLB and a Spanish Bachelor’s degree. It should be noted that many of the career prospects listed below require additional training and a previous national qualification examination.

The programme's curriculum consists of 241 credits: 120 credits are granted by KCL and 121 credits are awarded by UPF. Credits granted by KCL (120 ects) are subject to recognition by compulsory and optional subjects at UPF following a conversion table that has taken into account both contents and skills of each module. On the other hand, 60 out of 121 ects awarded by UPF are recognized by KCL at the end of the fourth year of the program.

At KCL, the programme's curriculum consists of compulsory subjects (105 credits) and optional subjects (15 credits). It should be noted that credits in England are assessed in a different manner, since two England credits are equivalent to one ects credit. During the 3rd and 4th years at UPF, two transition modules (Foundations of Spanish Private Law & Foundations of Spanish Criminal Law) and twenty compulsory modules (two of them studied during two terms) will be completed. These subjects will have a value of 121 ects (including 6 ects of the Bachelor’s Thesis).

Teaching at both KCL and UPF combine lectures and seminars. Lectures are geared to passing on knowledge with a critical outlook and establishing basic concepts. Seminars, which are taught in small groups, encourage active participation, nurture problem-solving abilities and promote the use of the skills that jurists require.
