Anti-gender hate speech on social media

Dra. Noelia Igareda - Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, UAB

Opening Keynote 2022  MA in International Studies in Media, Power and Difference

Anti-gender hate speech in the social networks is directed to groups of women, individual women or persons on the grounds of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Those attacks are rarely considered hate speech, because women are not legally considered a vulnerable group. It prevails the freedom of expression, despite the consequences that these attacks have on these women’s lives. Nowadays we work, communicate and almost mainly “exist” in a virtual context, so the invisibility of this form of hate speech can constitute a risk of our citizenship and rights.
