In 2025, Amsterdam University Press published the book Audiovisual Thinking and the Essay Film by Lourdes Monterrubio Ibáñez, a member of the CINEMA group. The book adopts a semio-pragmatic perspective with an interdisciplinary and intermedial approach, analysing how the process of audiovisual thinking manifests in essay films. It explores how issues of subjectivity and identity—whether individual, social, political or cultural—foster thought through the medium of cinema. The volume examines the Francophone European essay film from its first emergence in cinematic modernity to the present. The study is structured in three stages. The first analyses the intermedial forms used, such as the letter, the (self-)portrait, the dialogue, and the diptych. The second examines the audiovisual materials that are mobilised. The third addresses the audiovisual procedures that are generated. Through its analysis of works by Marker, Godard, Akerman, Varda and others, this book offers a new and detailed understanding of the production, evolution and achievements of the essay film in Francophone Europe.
