The Haas Research Group in Poetics of Knowledge invites you to explore the tradition of mysticism with a new, open-access course, "Alois M. Haas' Fundamental Texts of Western Mysticism" Drawing on the scholarship of Professor Haas, this self-paced program provides a unique opportunity to delve into the lives and works of pivotal mystical thinkers from the 13th to the 17th century.

The course presents carefully selected passages from Meister Eckhart, Johannes Tauler, Teresa of Ávila, John of the Cross, and others, that illuminate their thought and linguistic creativity. Materials are available in English, Catalan, Spanish, and, where applicable, the original languages of the texts. This flexible course has no fixed duration or structured sequence, allowing participants to tailor their journey to their own interests and schedule. Additionally, the course includes recitations by Professor Haas, complementary historical sources, and commentaries by experts.

The course is designed for students in the Humanities, but it welcomes anyone with a curiosity about the intersections of literature, philosophy, and religion.

The course brings together historical sources and essential texts from the rich tradition of Western mysticism, inviting participants to explore the profound insights and experiences of its key figures. Meister Eckhart’s works, including the poem Granum sinapis (The Mustard Seed), reveal a daring theological vision of unity with the divine, while Heinrich Seuse’s The Book of Truth offers reflections on the meaning of freedom and divine understanding. Nicholas of Cusa’s On Learned Ignorance and The Vision of God challenge readers to grapple with the mysteries of knowing and the unity of contradictions. Teresa of Avila’s The Book of Her Life provides a deeply personal account of her mystical experiences and the intimate dialogue she shared with the divine. Through these texts, among others, the course offers a gateway to understanding the language, thought, and practices that shaped the philosophical and creative innovations of the mystical writers.
