About the Chair
The Josep Fontana Chair was created by agreement of the Governing Council of the Pompeu Fabra University on February 23, 2022, at the proposal of the Institut d'Història Jaume Vicens Vives (IHJVV).
Linked to the Institut d'Història Jaume Vicens Vives, it is directed by:
- Josep Pich Mitjana, director
- Josep M. Delgado Ribas, deputy director
Its objective is to honour the figure of the great historian, UPF professor and founder of the Institut Universitari d'Història Jaume Vicens Vives and to promote the study, research, debate and dissemination of History in the broadest sense, bearing in mind its social function.
Among the planned activities we can highlight:
1. Organization of annual conferences on innovative topics in historical research such as history of gender, economic growth and inequality, total history, global history, the history of social groups without history, history in education or contemporary Catalan historiography, among other topics, with the participation of renowned national and international specialists.
2. Organization of Seminars and Conferences on topics of history and critical and alternative views of the current world.
3. Promote the edition of unpublished materials by Josep Fontana that are part of his rich legacy deposited in the UPF Library (about the Second Spanish Republic, the Spanish Civil War, Francoism, Marxism, the national question, various writings, etc.)
Fontana always supported young researchers, and this objective, as the historiographical debate and on problems of today's world, will always be present in the activity of the Chair. It will also promote activities related to the scientific figure of Josep Fontana and the topics he explored thanks to his unequivocal social and civic commitment.
