20 years of the Euro

min

Euro banknotes and coins were put into circulation on 1 January 2002. This year thus marks the 20th anniversary of the single currency’s launch. An entire generation has grown up with the euro, without ever having had to adapt to it: without having had to memorize the established exchange rate or watch as price after price went up due to rounding. It seems like a good time, then, to look back on the euro’s creation and revisit its major milestones.

But even these banknotes and coins, these everyday items we need to pay for goods and services, conceal a history, symbolism and even a few surprises. How was the euro created? Which countries were the first to adopt it? What were the exchange rates?

Whether it’s to test your knowledge of the euro or simply to learn some fun new facts, we challenge you to take our quiz!
