Martina Wiltschko's "Why miratives are (un)expected" at the Valence Asymmetries seminar

Martina Wiltcshko, ICREA Research Professor at UPF and one of the regular participants of the Valence Asymmetries seminar, was invited to present her recent research on miratives on 2 December 2025. In "Why miratives are (un)expected", she addressed the following puzzle: the marking of mirativity is incredibly diverse across languages, and nevertheless mirative strategies are extremely wide-spread across unrelated languages, which suggests that miratives are universal. In the proposed account, Prof. Wiltcshko appealed to the Interactional Spine Hypothesis, developed in her earlier work (2021, 2024)
