Economics and Business
The UPF Department of Economics and Business is a research oriented, leading centre that encourages its members to publish in the most prestigious journals. This policy has been successful and the Department consistently appears at the top of the publication rankings in Europe (it was rated sixth in the Tilburg University Economics Ranking 2004-2008 in terms of the publications of their faculty in top-five rated journals).
Apart from having the required infrastructure to develop top quality research, several factors have been instrumental to this productivity.
First, it has recruited top researchers with a consistent research agenda and an international perspective. Second, the success of the Ph.D. program -which has been recognized by the European Commission as a "Program of Excellence" and is part of the European Doctoral Program. Third, the Department seminars have played a key role in promoting interaction at the international level.
The Department has actively developed contacts with other leading institutions and is part of several European networks in the areas of Macroeconomics, Economics of Health, Economic Theory, Experimental Economics, Finance and I.O. In particular, with the financial backing of the Catalan government, The Department together with Institut d’Anàlisi Econòmica (CSIC) and the Department of Economics at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona have established the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Barcelona GSE), one of the top world research centers.
