Pablo Arias
I am an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) at the Engineering Department of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona, Spain. Before that, I was Senior Researcher at the Centre Borelli at University Paris-Saclay between 2015 and 2023, and a researcher at Fundació Barcelona Media between 2012 and 2015.
I graduated as a Telecommunications Engineer from the Universidad de la República (UdelaR) in Uruguay in 2006 and obtained my PhD at UPF in 2013 under the supervision of Vicent Caselles, on variational models for image and video inpainting. I received in 2024 the French Habilitation to direct research by the Hadamard Doctoral School of Mathematics of the University Paris-Saclay.
My research focuses on image and video restoration and editing problems (such as denoising, demosaicing, inpainting and super-resolution). Throughout my trajectory I've addressed these problems using different mathematical formalisms, such as variational methods and Bayesian modeling. Most recently I have focused on developing deep learning approaches for the solution of multi-frame restoration problems in real practical scenarios. My research has led to several collaborations with industrial partners in areas such as surveillance, x-ray medical imaging, video microscopy, and consumer cameras in mobile devices.
I have been involved in teaching mathematics and signal processing courses since 2001, at undergraduate and masters level, including the master 2 MVA (MATHÉMATIQUES, VISION, APPRENTISSAGE) at University Paris-Saclay, and the Inter-university Master in Computer Vision in Barcelona.
