Mathematics of Communication Research Group
Welcome to the Mathematics of Communication (MatCom) research group in the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). Founded in 2011 by Prof. Albert Guillén i Fàbregas, MatCom is now led by Prof. Alfonso Martinez and Dr. Josep Font-Segura. We study the mathematical foundations of modern communication systems—information theory, channel coding, signal processing, and related problems in statistical physics and applied probability.
MatCom enjoys strong international visibility. We co-chaired the IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT 2016, Barcelona), host regular thematic workshops, and collaborate with academic and industrial partners across Europe, North America and Asia. Our alumni have moved on to posts at leading institutions such as the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, KU Leuven, CentraleSupélec, TU Eindhoven, the National University of Singapore, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Simula Research Laboratory, among others—evidence of the breadth of our training.
At UPF we teach core courses in Calculus, Information Theory & Coding and Digital Data Transmission within the Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science and Audiovisual Systems degrees. Group members also contribute to departmental governance, serve on programme boards, and coordinate BSc tracks in Engineering.
