Jorge Lobo
I am an ICREA Research Professor at UPF School of Engineering, and a Visiting Professor at Imperial College (London) Department of Computing. After receiving a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Maryland (1990), I took a faculty position at the University of Illinois Chicago, where I obtained tenure (1997).
My early work in formal logic has been the basis of all my research, which lies at the interface of theory and practice in computer science. In 1998, I was invited to join Bell Labs’ newly-formed Network Computing group to help them integrate my work on rule systems as logic programs (then purely theoretical) into applications in the burgeoning field of soft-switches. This fruitful endeavor, which generated several technical publications, served to expand my interest in basic research to its real-world applications. In 2001, I became Principal Architect at Teltier Technologies, a start-up company founded by researchers from Bell Labs (now part of Cisco Systems). I returned to full-time research as a Staff Member of IBM TJ Watson Center (2004-14), before joining ICREA. My research focuses on symbolic knowledge representation, logic-based policy management, network management, and security. Recently, I have been working on neuro-symbolic systems that aim to integrate symbolic reasoning either within or as a separate component of a neural network. I have published two books, one on computational logic and another on network management. I have numerous publications in top journals and conferences in the areas of artificial intelligence, networks, security, and databases. I am also listed as a co-inventor in 10 patents. I am an ACM Distinguished Scientist and a member of the School of Engineering Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research Group.
