Universitat Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona is a young, public and modern university founded in 1990 and called to become one of the leading European universities. Despite its short history, it has grown to become the best Spanish university in virtually all internationally reputed rankings. The Department of Information and Communication Technologies was selected as one of the top 100 computer science departments in the world (ARWU/Shanghai ranking). Within the department, two groups contribute to HEAR-EU: SIMBIOSYS, focused on medical image processing, modelling and simulation, and PHYSENSE, which develops novel computer methods to better understand human physiology.

Alma Medical Imaging is an SME based in Barcelona, Spain. Created in 2005, it currently has a staff of 24 people, most of them working at the development and research groups. Alma develops and commercialises advanced computer software for medical diagnosis and surgery. Our products include radiological systems for visualization of medical image data sets (2D, 3D, MPR), computer-aided diagnosis (breast and colon cancer, as well as cardiovascular diseases), and surgical planning modules (orthopaedics, dental and plastic surgery). Alma works in close collaboration with an extensive network of clinical and technical collaborators, not least academic research centres, in the definition, implementation and standardisation of the future generation of software tools for in-silico based medicine.

Universität Bern (Switzerland)

ubernlogo

The University of Bern, through the Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics and the ARTORG Center for Computer Aided Surgery, is one of the pioneers and world leading institutions in the field of computer-assisted surgery, and a reference site for research on biomechanics. Its research specializes on surgical navigation, medical image analysis, smart surgical instruments, experimental biomechanics, computational bioengineering and tissue mechanobiology. The department of ENT surgery at the University Hospital Inselspital, University of Bern, is one of the early adopters of computer assisted and image guided procedures around the head. Early work in the field dates back to 1995, where some of the first of such interventions have been carried out. Today, the department's research focuses on the advancement of such technologies towards novel indications and to combine it with the latest developments in hearing aid technology and physiological measurements.
