Giulia Giovannini is a post-doc researcher (Margarita Salas fellowship) at Pompeu Fabra University. She has been a visiting researcher at Bologna Law School and Leiden Law School.

Giulia obtained her Ph.D. in Law from Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, Spain (2021) with a doctoral thesis on Co-maternity, the legal attribution of parenthood in female couples from a comparative perspective (cum laude, International Doctor Mention) under the supervision of Dr. Josep Ferrer Riba and Dr. Esther Farnós Amorós. In her thesis, she analyzed legal presumption and consent as models for determining legal co-maternity after the birth of the child.

Her work was awarded with the "Vega Sala legal prize" awarded by SCAF- Societat Catalana d'Advocats de Família. Giulia's thesis was published by Aranzadi Thomson Reuters (2023), Modelos de determinación de la co-maternidad derivada de reproducción asistida: Un análisis de derecho comparado - Co-maternity resulting from assisted reproductive technologies: a comparative perspective. Her book provides a complete overview of the many legal issues surrounding the establishing and challenging of legal parenthood and the assumption of parental responsibilities in cases of assisted reproductive tecnologies. 

Her research interests involve a wide range of domestic and comparative family law, in particular focusing on artificial reproductive technologies for single woman, heterosexual and homosexual couples, cross-border reproductive treatments, as well as co-parenthood and multi-parenthood law. She also explored the consecuences of legalizing private reproductive agreements in family matters, and new challenges in family law such as post-mortem reproduction, reproductive rights of transgender people and the acces to donors' identity for babies born through ART.

Giulia is associate professor of Family Law, Inheritance Law and Introduction to Business Law at UPF (bachelor in Law and Management); associate professor at Toulouse Business School Barcelona (bachelor in Management), associate professor at Universitat de Barcelona (Master in Susteinabile Development) and associate professor at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Master in Human Rights, Democracy and Globalization).
