Gemma Piella Fenoy

G. Piella is a Full Professor at the University of Pompeu Fabra (UPF). She earned her Telecommunication Engineering degree from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, and a PhD in Applied Sciences from the Universiteit van Amsterdam, The Netherlands. From 2003 to 2004, she was at UPC as a visiting professor. She then stayed at Télécom Paris, as a post-doctoral Marie Curie fellowship until 2005. Since then, she has been at UPF, first as a visiting professor, then as a Ramón y Cajal researcher, and currently as a Full Professor.

In 2013, she cofounded SIMBIOsys, a research group that subsequently cofounded the Barcelona Center of New Medical Technologies (BCN-MedTech). BCN-MedTech is recognized as a consolidated group by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Dr. Piella coordinates BCN-MedTech and leads the research areas of Medical Image Analysis and Machine Learning for Personalised Medicine, which are the core of her research. Her work is characterized by a strong theoretical background, applying rigorous mathematical foundations to biomedical engineering problems, thereby bridging theoretical insights with practical relevance. Her contributions have been recognized with the ICREA Academia award in 2021 and the DonaTIC (academic category) award in 2022. She is also a member of ELLIS (the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems) and a full member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Honor Research Society. During 2023-2024, she served as co-chair of the Artificial Intelligence Task Force in Avicenna Alliance.
