These words, spoken by Desmond Tutu, the first person ever to be awarded an honorary doctorate by UPF, are more applicable today than ever. The UPF condemns, and will always condemn, the use of violence to settle disputes. At UPF, we advocate approaching political or territorial conflicts based on dialogue and respect for all peoples and minorities.
As a university, we also want to show our support to the academic community in countries at war. Universities and scientific institutions are more necessary than ever in these regions. Access to education and the promotion of critical thinking, in the context of strong independent institutions, are the way to ensure the informed debate and reflection that can open the door to new avenues for finding solutions.
At UPF, we are aware of the university community’s concern for the human rights violations we are seeing in the conflicts around us. The Music Technology and the Interactive and Distributed Technologies for Education research groups are launching a musical annotation campaign linked to the TROMPA project with music recommendations for participants. The initiative, open to all, is accessible via the project platform.
The Music Technology (MTG) and the Interactive and Distributed Technologies for Education (TIDE) research groups at the UPF Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC), are launching a musical annotation campaign open to the general public, the third and last of the TROMPA project, dedicated to exploring the emotions music generates among its listeners. The campaign applies artificial intelligence to users’ musical preferences.
“Although we are trying to analyse the emotional perception of music, we can also use technology to induce our perception. So, we want to study how these mechanisms work to implement new technologies and applications”, say the coordinators of the campaign and members of the MTG.
Participation open to music lovers and the public in general
Participants follow a virtual itinerary that will guide them through the different music in order to record the emotions that listening to music arouses based on a series of questions. Participants can make daily annotations and, in return, they will receive personalized recommendations based on their annotations.
To take part, simply log onto the platform using a Google account, then all communications related to the project will be sent to a Google email account. After registering and taking a tutorial, users can make annotations and get music recommendations according to their profile.
