These words, spoken by Desmond Tutu, the first person ever to be awarded an honorary doctorate by UPF, are more applicable today than ever. The UPF condemns, and will always condemn, the use of violence to settle disputes. At UPF, we advocate approaching political or territorial conflicts based on dialogue and respect for all peoples and minorities.
As a university, we also want to show our support to the academic community in countries at war. Universities and scientific institutions are more necessary than ever in these regions. Access to education and the promotion of critical thinking, in the context of strong independent institutions, are the way to ensure the informed debate and reflection that can open the door to new avenues for finding solutions.

UPF is the 16th best young university in the world, according to the Times Higher Education rankings
The THE Young University Rankings 2022, which include the world’s best universities that are under 50 years old, places UPF in first position at national level and eighth in Europe. The University, which has seen improvement in four of the five dimensions included in the list compared with the 2021 edition, has fared particularly well in citations.
On 15th February, Times Higher Education (THE), which produces one of the world’s most prestigious and influential rankings, published the 2022 edition of the Young University Rankings, in which it ranks UPF 16th in the world (compared to 15th last year).
The THE Young University Rankings 2022 include the roughly 800 top institutions across the world that are under 50 years old. In the classification’s eleven editions that have been published to date, since 2012, UPF has ranked between 10th and 17th on nine occasions. Oriol Amat, rector of the University, asserted that "UPF has remained among the world’s top young universities despite competition from institutions with much greater funding".

At national level, UPF remains in first position, ahead of Ramon Llull University (ranked 121st) and the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (ranked 131st), while within Europe, Pompeu Fabra has been ranked eighth (compared to seventh last year). Leading the global rankings are PSL University (Paris Sciences & Lettres) (up one position) the Nanyang Technological University, in Singapore (down one position) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (no change). In the top ten, five institutions are European, four are Asian and one is from Oceania.

To produce the ranking of the best young universities, Times Higher Education uses the same performance indicators (thirteen in total) that it applies for its world ranking, in the last edition of which UPF was ranked 156th. However, the Young University Rankings give less weight to indicators linked with reputation, to offer a more reliable reflection of the characteristics of the youngest institutions.
In the 2022 edition of the Young University Rankings, UPF has achieved an overall score of 62.8 points (slightly higher than its 62.4 points in the 2021 edition) and was given the following scored in the five different areas: Citations (94.2), Industry income (47.8), International outlook (66.8), Research (51.3) and Teaching (43.2). As compared with last year, it has improved in Citations, International outlook, Research and Teaching, and has fallen back in Industry income.
Each of the areas has its own specific weighting: teaching (30%), with different variables related with the overall process of teaching, such as the ratio of students per teacher or the institution’s academic reputation; research (30%), obtained based on the volume of income for research, scientific output and the institution’s reputation in this field.
The three remaining dimensions are: citations in publications (30%), aimed at measuring the influence of research findings; international outlook (7.5%), with ratios that measure the percentage of local and international students and teachers, as well as international collaboration with other institutions; and industry income (2.5%), originating from knowledge transfer.

The UPF Legal Clinic regularly holds talks and roundtables on the protection of human rights in crisis regions.
Libraries Without Borders
The Libraries Without Borders programme, sponsored by the Catalan Development Cooperation Agency (ACCD), offers Catalan public library patrons knowledge and insight into situations of human rights violations and provides resources to take action.
Council for At-Risk Academics
The Council for At-Risk Academics, in partnership with universities and higher education institutions, provides urgently-needed help to academics in immediate danger, those forced into exile, and many who choose to work on in their home countries despite serious risks.
