B.Sc and MSc from the University of Copenhagen; PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Gøsta Esping-Andersen was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008, and into the British Academy in 2010.

He has been awarded two Doctor Honoris Causa awards: from Roskilde University (2001) and from University of Copenhagen (2012).

Prior to Universitat Pompeu Fabra,  he was professor at Harvard University (1978-85), the European University in Firenze (1986-94) and the University of Trento (1994-2001).

He is member of the Scientific Council of the Danish Institute for Social Research and of the Council of Advisors of Population Europe. He serves on the editorial board of European Sociological Review, European Journal of Industrial Relations, Journal of European Social Policy, and Stato&Mercato.

He has worked extensively for international organizations (United Nations, OECD, World Bank and the EU Commission) and for both the Belgian and Portuguese presidencies of the EU.

His books include The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism (1990),  Changing Classes (1994), Social Foundations of Post-Industrial Economies (1999),  and The Incomplete Revolution (2009).
