MOG paves the way for green streaming technologies in video distribution

05.02.2024

Nowadays, media distribution organisation use the “send it all” paradigm when distributing content. This means that for each content, several resolutions are produced and sent to the different cloud nodes provided by the CDN provider, independently on their consumption patterns. Basically, multiple forms of the same content are sent to the cloud independently of their usage. This increases broadcasters cloud storage costs and is inherently inefficient as it uses a PUSH methodology instead of waiting for requests from the demand side. At the same time, energy is wasted in transcoding unused content for streaming and/or storing this content in different cloud servers.

In EMERALD, MOG will develop a new media ingest and streaming pipeline that will reduce the carbon footprint of media distribution and lower cloud costs by correlating the stream of a video with its potential usage in a given region. Consumption metrics such as the number of times a specific resolution is played in a certain location or the variation throughout the day of its consumption are gathered by MOG, analised and fed to a dynamic streaming adaptation pipeline that tries to use a just in time approach.

With the support of the project partners, the work done in EMERALD will contribute decisively to the Green Deal by making streaming technologies more efficient and sustainable.
