From SMPTE MTS2025: Towards Automated Perceptual Shot Matching in Motion Pictures
From the recent SMPTE Media Technology Summit in Pasadena, FilmLight’s Image Engineer, Daniele Siragusano, and Research Engineer, Julius Tschannerl, present some of the recent progress made in the Emerald project.
Matching the colour balance of shots within scenes of motion pictures is a crucial early step during the grading process that lays the foundation for the creative work of the colourist. To speed up this process, we propose an automated matching algorithm that takes perceptual effects as well as scene-specific context and offers an intuitive, parameterised interface. We demonstrate that the algorithm can achieve 70% of the quality of a human grade while saving 20% of the time and highlight the value of long-term studies with real world examples to better quantify these gains.
