EMERALD
BBC R&D team showcasing their Emerald innovations
The Emerald team from BBC Research & Development recently demonstrated their work from the project at two events; at the ACM SIGGRAPH European Conference on Visual Media Production (CVMP) in London and internally at BBC Studios offices in Bristol.
The BBC’s work in the project includes developing a low cost virtual production system that utilises Gaussian Splats for the virtual environment; and tools for content understanding that speed up production workflows and make it easier to reuse existing content.
At CVMP in December, BBC R&D presented a live demonstration of the virtual production system. Attendees were able to see the complete set up and gets hands-on with the technology. In addition, a short paper and poster were presented on the content understanding work. The conference provided a forum to discuss the work with both academic and industry experts and get their input into how the tools should develop.
The work was presented again in January at BBC Studios in Bristol. This is the base for the BBC’s Natural History Unit – the world leaders in wildlife filmmaking. The event was an opportunity to engage with production colleagues who form part of the intended audience for the team’s work. Their expert insights will help with evaluating the output from the project in its final few months.
