El patriotisme fiscal i el rei emèrit (Es Diari de Menorca)

10.04.2026

New opinion column by Guillem López in the newspaper Es Diari, titled “Fiscal Patriotism and the Emeritus King.”

In the column, he strongly criticizes certain self-proclaimed patriots who, in a rather ridiculous imitation of Trump (since they lack his power), focus solely on hostility toward Catalan identity and nostalgia for Francoism. He considers the idea of “fiscal patriotism” in some sectors to be hypocritical. He argues that those who claim to be patriots often tolerate or justify unethical behavior, such as tax evasion or the use of privileges, while attacking other groups.

The author points out the lack of exemplary conduct of the emeritus king, as well as the support or silence of some institutions and media, and questions the narrative that seeks to rehabilitate him. Overall, he denounces a double standard and a system that protects “higher” interests over transparency and justice.
