The column argues that excessively simplifying economic arguments can make them vulnerable to criticism and ultimately discredit them for being incomplete. It illustrates this with the debate on immigration, where proposals such as fair minimum wages or language requirements are often dismissed, even though they could encourage more productive and responsible employment. It also challenges the false dilemma between growth and degrowth, arguing that the real issue is how growth occurs: well-being increases through productivity, the value of goods, and innovation—not through labor exploitation. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need to incorporate environmental and social costs into growth and to evaluate it not only by annual income, but also by its impact on human and social capital. Ultimately, the key is to better measure and guide growth to ensure sustainable progress and genuine improvements in well-being.
